Chester is the county town and the hardest address in Cheshire to move in or out of — not because the properties are difficult inside, but because almost nothing about the streets was designed for a vehicle.
Inside the walls
Narrow streets, several pedestrianised with timed vehicle access, loading restrictions on most of the rest, and very little standing anywhere. Moves here are planned rather than improvised: the loading point is established at survey, the timing is built around when access is permitted, and where the vehicle cannot get close we shuttle with extra hands — costed in the quote.
The Rows
Worth singling out. The Rows put a whole second level of property above street level, reached by steps from the pavement. Everything is carried, there is nowhere to stand outside, and the window is short. We look at these before quoting rather than after.
The period stock
Black-and-white timber frontages, Georgian townhouses and Victorian villas, most of it inside a conservation area and much of it listed. The building is usually the fragile part: lime plaster marks, original boards scuff, and old framing will not forgive a corner taken at speed. Boards and padding go down first and the route through the house is agreed before anything moves.
The suburbs
Hoole, Handbridge, Boughton, Upton, Vicars Cross and Saltney. Victorian and interwar terraces and semis, postwar housing, and modern development on the edges. Far easier loading, driveways in most of it, and the bulk of the city's actual volume.
Out towards the border
Saltney, Broughton and the Welsh side, plus Ellesmere Port and Neston to the north. Modern estate housing with proper access, and the A55 and M53 close by for anything continuing further.

Can you load inside the walls?
Sometimes, with arranging. Several streets are pedestrianised with timed vehicle access, the rest are narrow with restrictions, and there is very little standing. We establish the loading point at survey and shuttle where the vehicle cannot get close.

A specific problem: the Rows put a second level of property above street level, reached by steps from the pavement. Everything is carried, there is no standing outside, and the loading window is tight. Worth a proper look before quoting.
Is the black-and-white property listed?
A great deal of it, and the conservation area covers most of the historic core. Protection goes down before anything moves — old timber framing and lime plaster do not forgive a knock that modern plaster would.
